2014 World Championship Games 4-6

The fourth and fifth games of the World Championship match between Magnus Carlsen and Vishy Anand saw two hard fought but relatively uneventful draws, leaving the match still level at 2½ point each.

The sixth game yesterday, however, saw some real drama and an extraordinary double oversight. Carlsen, playing White, had some advantage but, as the annotations from The Week in Chess demonstrate, his 26th move was a horrible blunder. Anand could have played 26...Nxe5, winning two pawns with a probable win, but, amazingly, he missed the opportunity and was gradually outplayed.

So at the halfway stage of the 12 game match, Carlsen has a one point lead. He has White again in the 7th game tomorrow.

2014 World Championship Game 3

Game 3 (apologies for the delayed posting) saw Vishy Anand equalise after some deep opening preparation.

He reached a favourable position with a strong pawn on c7 which proved too difficult for Carlsen to defend.

Here's the game, with annotations taken from The Week in Chess.

2014 World Championship Game 1

The 2014 World Championship match between current champion Magnus Carlsen from Norway and former champion Vishy Anand from India is now under way in Sochi, Russia.

If your children are interested in chess you should encourage them to watch the games online. You can find live coverage at chess24.com

The first game was drawn and Carlsen won the second game.

Here's the first game with notes from The Week in Chess, which, by the way, is recommended for all the latest chess news.

In Summary

My latest Chess Improver blog post summarises what I consider to be reasons why most children at Primary School chess clubs make little progress and do not develop a lasting interest in chess.
